MINISTRY OF POSTS AND TELECOMMUNICATIONS, ITALY
New institutional buildings for a new Italy. Following the massive expansion of the Italian public administrative apparatus in the 1950s and 1960s, there was a need to ensure spaces in line with the new face our country was taking on.
The new headquarters of the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications in the EUR district of Rome is an example of this. Built between 1969 and 1976, it significantly contributed to improving essential services and made communications between various parts of the country and abroad more fluid.
The complex occupies a whole block of the EUR district of Rome, in the area between Viale America and Viale Europa, with some buildings overlooking the nearby Viale Asia. It consists of 10 buildings, 8 and 13 stories high, made of reinforced concrete structures and precast concrete panels, connected to each other by a system of tunnels and corridors that stretch along the three underground floors and toward the nearby subway station.
The main building is a 21-story tower with a cross-shaped plan and continuous steel and glass facades.
