The Museum

Evolutio is the first digitally native museum showcasing the examples of large infrastructure built by Webuild and the companies that have been incorporated into the Group over the course of its 120 years in operation. A snapshot of the many gigantic constructions and infrastructures created on a gargantuan scale by people, for people: examples of unparalleled ingenuity that are often also considered works of art, all forming a new educational narrative that delves into the evolution of building techniques and the many benefits that this infrastructure has to offer to people and places alike.

The story of Webuild’s history is accompanied by previously unreleased accounts, as well as original photos and films selected from the Group’s extensive multimedia archive, including valuable black-and-white material from leading experts in industrial photography, such as Gugliemo Chiolini, and famous directors such as Ermanno Olmi.

Evolutio showcases hundreds of the more than 3,700 major infrastructure projects completed thus far by the Webuild Group: the dams in Northern Italy built for Edison in the early 20th century; the Kariba Dam in Zimbabwe, which marked the first reservoir in Africa to be partially financed by the World Bank, with the largest loan that had ever been granted by an international organisation; the hydroelectric plants in Ethiopia and the preservation of the Abu Simbel Temples in Egypt; the expansion of the Panama Canal; the metro networks in Paris, Copenhagen, Rome, Thessaloniki, Milan, Ryadh and Doha that are reshaping the concept of the sustainable mobility system; the Autostrada del Sole motorway and the high-speed railway system that have greatly facilitated economic and social integration between Northern and Southern Italy; the Stavros Niarchos Cultural Centre in Athens; the New Genoa San Giorgio Bridge, and many more besides.

Countless ways to view the works

Evolutio is an exhibition with a vast array of ideal guides: see the works not only through the eyes of those who built them, but also of those who use these major infrastructures, with in-depth explorations of the benefits of each project. And, given that the construction of each project represents a dream being fulfilled, every single one has also sparked a domino effect of the imagination, with insights into the cultural aspects influenced by each project, spanning the worlds of music, filmmaking and art.

A living, breathing museum

Evolutio is very much a living space, ripe for experimentation. It offers a modern creative development platform in that each project is a way station, a sort of island crossed by the river of human ingenuity, which is ultimately the common thread that runs through the entire museum.

Like a never-ending exhibition that is constantly updated with new projects, Evolutio offers the public a place with discovery, experience, understanding and inspiration at its heart. It is an opportunity to explore the excellence of Italian engineering, the major infrastructural achievements made by the country’s long-established companies whose lessons and accomplishments still remain a key part of the Webuild Group.

Educational mission

We also have a dedicated space for younger visitors in the Edutainment section, where they can discover - in a fun, hands-on way - how you dig through a mountain, what kinds of professionals contribute to building a railway line, what skills are required, and how a mechanical mole works; plus, thanks to apps and simulators, they can even enjoy an immersive experience of a construction site, learning first-hand about every stage involved in building a bridge, for example, by selecting the necessary operations and machinery with the assistance of a virtual technician.
