ÎLOT BALMORAL, MONTRÉAL, CANADA
An eco-friendly building aligned with LEED Gold sustainability goals, Îlot Balmoral has become a symbol of the city's skyline. Designed by the Canadian firm Provencher_Roy, this iconic building has become a landmark in Montreal's Quartier des Spectacles. It houses the National Film Board of Canada and the UQAC's School of Digital Arts, Animation, and Design (NAD School).
The building consists of two volumes, each 13 stories high, separated by a full-height atrium that runs diagonally, bringing natural light into the interiors. The overall shape resembles an almost perfect cube, characterized by a diagonal cut with the inner faces painted in a vibrant red.
The glass facade shields the interior spaces from solar heat and maximizes natural light, contributing to the achievement of LEED Gold sustainability goals, and it can also function as a giant screen.
The building's design engages with the urban context. The two structures are connected by pedestrian bridges that offer spectacular views of the urban landscape, with Mont Royal in the background.
