Dulles 4th Runway, Virginia

DULLES INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT, 4TH RUNWAY, VIRGINIA, USA
Very often, an increase in the number of international flights at airport results in the need to increase the number of runways. This was the case at Washington Dulles International Airport, where a project was undertaken to add a 3.11-kilometre concrete runway and parallel taxiway to improve the airport's capacity and efficiency.
Lane Construction (Webuild Group) won the first of three lots for the construction of this fourth runway, meeting the strict guidelines of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
One of the most innovative aspects of the project was the improvement of the airport's capacity, allowing for up to 100,000 additional annual operations and 3,000,000 passenger boardings. These innovations have reduced the average delay per operation by 2.5 minutes, contributing to greater operational efficiency.
In addition, 1.4km of drainage channels were constructed and 6.7km of security fencing installed.
For this project, Lane received the 2008 Capital Construction Programme Quarterly Safety Award in the Large Contractor category.
