COUNCIL OF MINISTERS OF THE EUROPEAN ECONOMIC COMMUNITY IN BRUSSELS, BELGIUM
A new building fitting for one of the governing bodies of Europe. This was the goal that accompanied the construction of the headquarters of the Council of Ministers of the European Community, whose works began in 1990.
Starting from the 1980s, the progressive development of European institutions — with successive enlargements in the number of member countries and new responsibilities of the community institutions — also necessitated new buildings capable of adequately housing offices and meeting spaces. The need for a more fitting headquarters for the Council of Ministers began to be felt in 1985, and in Brussels, construction began in 1990 for a new 12-story building, featuring a conference hall of 55,000 m2.
The project involved the construction of all structures in pre-stressed concrete, prefabricated elements, and metal structures for the new building, including a parking area of 75,000 m2 and a general secretariat of 80,000 m2.
