ABUJA CULTURAL CENTER AND MILLENNIUM TOWER, NIGERIA
The Cultural Center and Millennium Tower, located in the center of Abuja, between the Church and the Mosque, form a multifunctional complex intended to house the most important Museum of African art in the country and one of the largest in the world. The complex also includes an auditorium for 2000 spectators, enclosed in a pyramidal structure of steel and glass, designed by Italian architects. Next to the Cultural Center, the construction of the capital's main square is planned, dominated by the Millennium Tower, a 170 meter high tower with a viewing platform and a revolving panoramic restaurant.
The complex is a "city within a city" with parking, shops, restaurants, gyms, an indoor swimming pool, conference rooms, hotels, museums and an auditorium, all connected via an underground tunnel. The coexistence of recreational, cultural and commercial activities represents an architectural challenge to meet the needs of safety, well-being and durability. The electricity requirement of 7 Megawatts is ensured by a dedicated line and a power house with 7 backup diesel generators.
Construction faced engineering challenges, such as planning activities in relation to the rainy season and strong winds. The project symbolizes the fusion and integration between Christian and Muslim cultures, as the Cultural Center is located between the Ecumenical Center and the Central Mosque. In 2010, the construction site hosted the celebration of Nigeria's 50 years of independence and received recognition for its high safety standards from the Nigerian authorities.
