UDINE-TARVISIO STATE BORDER RAILWAY, DOUBLING OF PONTEBBA-STATE BORDER SECTION, ITALY
A new railway line through the mountains to connect our country with neighboring ones. This is how the doubling of the Pontebba - State border section, on the Udine - Tarvisio - State border railway line, can be summarized. The new route will reduce travel times, increase train frequency, and improve punctuality. Additionally, the doubling will favor freight transport, contributing to greater environmental sustainability by reducing the use of road transport.
The existing route winds along the entire upper valley of the Fella River. After passing under the ramps of the A23 motorway, the line enters the San Leopoldo tunnel and crosses the Rio Bianco valley via a viaduct. It then enters the Malborghetto tunnel, from which, after crossing the S.S. 13 "Pontebbana", the existing railway line, the Fella River, and the A23 motorway, it reaches the Ugovizza-Valbruna station. It then proceeds into the Camporosso tunnel, subsequently crossing the Slizza stream valley via a viaduct. Next come the Tarvisio tunnel, the overpass of S.S. 54, and finally the new Tarvisio Boscoverde station.
From here, the new railway line starts, built by the Group in collaboration with the Consorzio Carnia, which crosses the Rio Bianco-Val Romana with a 300 m arch viaduct, featuring 25 m spans and a 135 m arch span, then entering the Leila tunnel, crossing the Slizza stream and the new motorway upon exit, and finally reaching the border with Austria.
Among the complementary works carried out are the excavation of a pilot tunnel (3.90 m diameter) extending 23,312 m, the widening of the "Malborghetto" tunnel to double track for a length of 7,843 m, the excavation of the Tarvisio tunnel extending 987 m, including a 250 m section with three tracks, viaducts, and the Tarvisio Boscoverde border station.
