PALERMO - CATANIA - MESSINA HC RAILWAY LINE, CALTANISSETTA XIRBI - NUOVA ENNA SECTION, ITALY
27 km of new railway line, 20 km of tunnels - about 90% of which were excavated using TBMs - and 3 km of viaducts: these are the figures for Lot 4A of the Palermo-Catania-Messina high-capacity railway line. But the importance of this project goes far beyond the figures.
At the heart of this initiative is a focus on sustainability. The new Palermo-Catania-Messina line, of which Lot 4A is an integral part, is a strategic project not only for Sicily but for the whole of Italy. Also funded by PNRR, it aims to increase the speed and efficiency of freight and passenger transport on the island, reducing emissions by around 5,900 tonnes of CO2 per year, making a significant contribution to the fight against climate change.
The Palermo-Catania-Messina line (within which Webuild is also constructing the Bicocca-Catenanuova and Nuova Enna-Dittaino sections on the Palermo-Catania line and the Taormina-Giampilieri and Fiumefreddo-Taormina/Letojanni sections on the Messina-Catania line) is part of the Scandinavian-Mediterranean corridor of the TEN-T network, linking Sicily with the rest of Europe in an integrated system of sustainable and efficient transport.
