MILAN RAILWAY LINK, ITALY
Contributing to decongesting railway stations while simultaneously increasing the offer of urban rail transport. Almost an oxymoron, but that's what the Milan Railway Link has made possible.
The Milan Railway Link is an underground public transportation line that connects different areas of the city, facilitating urban and suburban travel. Inaugurated in 1997, the link crosses Milan from northwest to southeast, with strategic stations such as Porta Garibaldi, Repubblica, and Porta Vittoria. The line is used by numerous regional and suburban trains, making it a crucial hub for commuters. Thanks to the link, it is possible to quickly reach the city center from the outskirts and vice versa, improving the efficiency of Milan's public transportation system. Additionally, the infrastructure helps reduce road traffic and pollution, promoting a sustainable mobility model. The railway link represents a key element for integrating various modes of transportation into a single, efficient, and comprehensive network.
Impregilo S.p.A., later merged into the Webuild Group, participated in the construction of five sections of the Milan Railway Link, which included the construction of three stations.
Among the structures built were 4 km of tunnel with an 8.03 m diameter excavated with an EPB shield, 1.14 km excavated with a point shield, 3 km of tunnel excavated using traditional methods, as well as the construction of two stations and the refurbishment of roads and sewage systems.
During the execution of the works, road traffic was never interrupted, only temporarily diverted in the area affected by the works through the construction of a Bailey-type metal bridge.
