Who made David Bowie angry?

In addition to hosting the matches played by the two city teams, the grass of the Olimpico has been and is the stage for many major Italian and international sporting and non-sporting events; Champions League finals, Golden Galas, the World Championships in Athletics, and the Six Nations rugby tournament. It has also hosted legendary concerts, from Miles Davis to Vasco Rossi, Tina Turner, Madonna, David Bowie… Interestingly, one of David Bowie’s most disappointing records is linked to Rome’s Stadio Olimpico

On 9 July 1996 he performed the shortest concert in his history there. The Thin White Duke left the stage after just an hour - the minimum so that the organisers did not terminate the contract - leaving the fans (almost) speechless.

We don't know why Bowie got so annoyed that he made this decision. There are three theories: the delay of the supporting bands who had started playing in the afternoon, which forced him to start more than one hour later than expected; the action of the reporters who pelted the stage with their passes to protest against their only being allowed to take photos during the first song; or the fact that the curve had not sold out. Who knows. Here is the meagre set list from that evening:

1.    Look Back In Anger
2.    Scary Monsters
3.    The Hearts Filthy Lesson
4.    Outside
5.    Aladdin Sane
6.    The Voyeur Of Utter Destruction
7.    The Man Who Sold The World
8.    Hallo Spaceboy
9.    Breaking Glass
10.    Telling Lies
11.    Jump They Say
12.    Under Pressure
13.    Heroes
