RAILWAY LINE HC PALERMO - CATANIA - MESSINA, FIUMEFREDDO - TAORMINA/LETOJANNI RAILWAY SECTION, ITALY
The Fiumefreddo - Taormina/Letojanni railway section is synonymous with the possibility of travelling between the beautiful coastlines of eastern Sicily, but also with the possibility of travelling quickly through the rural areas immersed in the Sicilian countryside, and therefore with the support and development of the South.
The project includes about 13.9 km of new double-track railway line, including the construction of the Taormina - Letojanni junction, and is part of the Palermo - Catania - Messina railway axis, part of the Scandinavia-Mediterranean corridor of the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T), the European network for sustainable mobility.
It includes the Taormina underground station, an artificial tunnel at Fiumefreddo, two viaducts and two natural tunnels. The first, the Calatabiano tunnel, is a double track with a single tube and a length of 3.3 kilometres; the second, the Taormina tunnel, is a double tube and a length of 6.1 kilometres.
When completed, the works will reduce the journey time between Messina and Catania by approximately 30 minutes, allowing the development of a metropolitan service from Catania to Taormina, connecting rural villages that currently have no sustainable means of transport.
