PALERMO - CATANIA - MESSINA HC RAILWAY LINE, TAORMINA - GIAMPILIERI SECTION, ITALY
The major Palermo-Catania-Messina railway project includes the Taormina-Giampilieri section, which involves the design and execution of works for the construction of a new railway line with a total length of approximately 28.3 km.
The route of the new line is mainly in tunnels, with no less than two single-bore natural tunnels, six double-bore tunnels and seven viaducts, but it is further away from the coast than the existing line.
Among the most important works is the Sciglio tunnel, which, at over 9 km, will be the longest of the entire Giampilieri-Fiumefreddo section and will also extend into the adjacent Taormina-Fiumefreddo section.
This infrastructure is part of the European Union's initiative for the development of sustainable mobility, designed to complete the European TEN-T corridor system, thus enabling the development of metropolitan services between rural areas that currently have no sustainable means of transport.
