DULLES INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT, AEROTRAIN MAIN STATION, VIRGINIA, USA
Washington Dulles International Airport is one of the busiest airports in the United States, and with the growing demand for air travel, it was necessary to develop a system that would get people to their boarding gates faster and solve the problem of overcrowding in the terminals and on the tarmac.
AeroTrain was born: an innovative two-track, two-mile rail system that facilitates passenger mobility (Automated People Mover System) from the main terminal to the peripheral areas of the airport.
AeroTrain's main Station is underground, spans four levels and is adjacent to the terminal. The lower level is reminiscent of a modern underground station, while the upper level features a complex prestressed structure with large skylights and fine finishes that echo the airport's original design.
AeroTrain has reduced travel time between the main terminal and other areas of the airport by replacing most of the previous mobile transport systems used by passengers and improving connectivity with the surrounding area.
The project received Mid-Atlantic Construction's prestigious Best of 2009 Award Project of the Year - Transportation, recognising excellence in the design and construction of the AeroTrain.
