ROME METRO LINE B1, SECTION PIAZZA CONCA D'ORO - PIAZZALE JONIO, ITALY
The extension of the Bologna - Conca d'Oro section of the Rome Metro Line B1 has significantly contributed to the improvement of sustainable mobility in the city, connecting the Montesacro neighbourhoods with the city centre, metro Line A, Termini station and the southern suburbs of Rome.
The project works included civil and plant engineering along an underground route of more than 1 km, including a double-track tunnel, a new station and two ventilation shafts.
Located on a hill, Jonio station was built with safety and urban integration in mind. The surrounding buildings were secured before work began, and the urban integration of the station included the construction of a commercial building with innovative architecture and finishing materials.
The tunnel was excavated with a TBM (Tunnel Boring Machine) and, crossing geologically complex terrain under water table, required advanced techniques to ensure ground stability and protect existing structures.
In addition to the direct mobility benefits, the project included the construction of three underground car parks serving Annibaliano, Conca d'Oro and Jonio stations, further improving accessibility for commuters.
The construction of the Piazza Conca d'Oro - Piazzale Jonio section was particularly challenging , as the quality of the ground and the presence of a shallow groundwater table increased the difficulty of the work. However, the success of the project has made Rome's transport network much more efficient, reducing traffic and improving the quality of life for citizens and tourists.
For these reasons, the site has attracted the attention of national and international technical delegations and has become a model for future metro projects in other cities.
