Obsession with records

Despite its position in an area very likely inhabited in 3000 BC, Dubai didn’t exist until the early 19th century, when the Bu Flasa tribe settled around Dubai Creek. The first written mention was in 1905: Dubai began to prosper thanks to trade and a tax exemption policy.

However, everything changed with the discovery of oil in 1966 as Dubai became one of the modern world's wealthiest and most forward-looking cities. Although still oil-based, its economy boasts various other industries, infrastructure works, trade, finance and tourism.

Since then, it has become the city of records, where they strive to be the best. For example, in terms of height, Dubai is home to the Burj Khalifa, the world's tallest skyscraper (828 metres), and the world's highest observation wheel at 250 metres (Dubai Eye). And, then what about the 68,000 marine animals swimming in 25 million litres of water in the largest aquarium on the planet? And that's not all!

Dubai boasts over 150 entries in the Guinness World Records, ranging from the world's fastest police car (0 to 100 km/h in 2.5 seconds) to the tallest chocolate sculpture (13.5 metres and 4,200 kg). Then, there are oddities such as the biggest teacup, holding 5,000 litres, or the 5km-long gold 'chain'.

In short, if it's not a record, Dubai isn't interested!
