ANATOLIAN HIGHWAY, TURKEY
It is still the backbone of Turkey's road network and connects Istanbul to Ankara. The Anatolian Highway is 400 km long, with over 110 km directly built by the Webuild Group. It has dual carriageways - one for each direction of travel - each with three lanes plus an emergency lane.
The project was executed according to the most advanced European design standards. It features gradients of about 6% to overcome, a geologically unstable terrain that crosses a secondary branch of the Anatolian fault, requiring careful route planning and the installation of complex and state-of-the-art seismic systems for the time.
A source of inspiration for many designers, the structure withstood two violent earthquakes in the area during the 1990s, thus becoming a benchmark for modern seismic technologies. The viaducts are imposing and include Viaduct 1, which withstood the strong 1999 earthquake: it has a length of 2,313 m and features two carriageways, each 17.50 m wide, with piers averaging 40 m in height.
