Weija Dam, Ghana

WEIJA DAM, GHANA
An artificial lake of about 38 km². Such is the size of the reservoir generated by the Weija Dam in Ghana. Built between 1974 and 1978, the dam blocks the Densu River to supply water to Accra, the capital of Ghana. Approximately 80% of the potable water needs of the city and surrounding areas come from the dam.
From a technical standpoint, the earth and rock dam, with a central impervious core of concrete and an integrated spillway structure, is 370 m long and 17 m high. The reservoir can store up to 113,000,000 m³ of water, while the embankment volume is 310,000 m³.
Its construction has stabilized the water supply for the city and surrounding areas, significantly improving the quality of life for the inhabitants.
