Rosamarina Dam, Italy

ROSAMARINA DAM, ITALY
A reservoir of 100,000,000 m³ of water to be allocated for potable, industrial, and irrigation uses in Palermo and north-western Sicily. This is the core of the Rosamarina dam project, located in the San Leonardo valley near the medieval town of Caccamo, in the Province of Palermo.
The dam operates on an arch-gravity scheme and is 84 m high and approximately 200 m long at the crown. The works began in 1972, but during the construction of the diversion works and the execution of the foundation excavations, a significantly disturbed geological structure was revealed, previously masked by the detrital covering of the banks. This necessitated a reworking of the project, moving the dam foundations up the mountain. The revised project was definitively approved in April 1978. The works were completed in 1992.
The total maximum water flow that can be discharged from all outlets is 2,435 m³/s.
