MONT-CENIS DAM, FRANCE
A border dam. This is how the Mont-Cenis Dam can be defined. The peculiarity of this structure is that it is located almost on the border between Italy and France, politically belonging to the latter, specifically in the Savoie Department, in the Alpine region of Rhône-Alpes.
Built between 1963 and 1968, it represents a strategic asset for transalpine energy policy. It is an earthfill dam with a volume of 15,000,000 m³ of rock and earth, a height of 120 m, and a crest length of about 1400 m. The dam creates a lake of 660 hectares. It serves two hydroelectric plants, Villarodin in French territory and Venaus in Italian territory.
