Limmernboden Dam over Linth River, Switzerland

LIMMERNBODEN DAM OVER LINTH RIVER, SWITZERLAND
Exceptional means and solutions for a particularly challenging project. This was the case for the Limmernboden Dam in the canton of Glarus, Switzerland.
Built between 1959 and 1962, it is located in the heart of a particularly inaccessible area due to the high altitude (about 1850 m above sea level) and the avalanche risk that characterizes the area. To complete the work, it was necessary to build three large cable cars, capable of transporting up to 18 tons of materials from the valley to the construction site.
From a technical point of view, the Limmernboden Dam is an arch dam, 146 m high and 375 m long at the crest. It blocks the Linth River and creates an artificial reservoir of about 90,000,000 m³ of water. The spillway has a capacity of 130 cubic meters of water per second.
