KOKA HYDROELECTRIC PLANT, ETHIOPIA
One of the symbols of a land reclamation plan aimed at improving the agricultural system of the country. This represents the Koka hydroelectric plant on the Awash River, eighty kilometers from the city of Addis Ababa, in Ethiopia. It was built between 1958 and 1960.
The Koka dam is the first hydroelectric facility built in Ethiopia with the aim of providing a source of electric power for the country's economic development. The dam, a concrete gravity type with a crest length of 410 m and a height of 33 m, was completed in 1950. Power generation began in 1960.
The project is completed with some ancillary works, such as preliminary works for the diversion of the river, civil works regarding the dam, intake, forced conduits, and power plant, and the electrical connection to the cities of Addis Ababa and Dire Dawa, with two power lines and the related transformer stations in the two cities.
