GEBIDEM HYDROELECTRIC SCHEME, SWITZERLAND

The Gebidem Dam, located in Switzerland, was constructed between 1964 and 1967. The structure, designed as a double-curvature arch dam, has a maximum height of 120 meters and a crest length of 300 meters. A total of 215,000 m³ of concrete was used for its construction. The dam is primarily fed by meltwater from the Great Aletsch Glacier and other surrounding mountain streams.

A distinctive feature of the Gibidum reservoir is that about 65% of its catchment area is glaciated. This means that the stored water is rich in sediment, which causes significant wear on the turbine wheels of the associated power plant. To mitigate this problem, the entire reservoir is flushed annually. This operation requires a production shutdown for two or three days, allowing for the removal of accumulated sediment and maintenance of the equipment.

The main function of the dam is to produce electricity by harnessing the meltwater from glaciers and mountain streams. The generated energy is fed into the national grid, significantly contributing to Switzerland's renewable energy supply.

The construction of the dam required considerable engineering and logistical efforts, given the complexity of the mountainous terrain and extreme climatic conditions. However, the completion of this infrastructure has enabled the efficient utilization of the region's water resources, ensuring a sustainable and renewable energy source.

In summary, the Gebidem Dam represents a significant example of hydroelectric engineering in Switzerland. Its construction and operation have allowed for the use of glacier meltwater for power generation, making a substantial contribution to the country's energy sustainability. The periodic maintenance of the reservoir is essential to ensure the efficiency and longevity of the turbines, making this facility a model of responsible natural resource management.
