Towers never go out of fashion!

From the nuraghe of prehistoric Sardinia to the Mesopotamian ziggurats, from the military and astronomical observatories of the Greeks, Romans and pre-Columbian civilisations to London's Big Ben, towers have accompanied humanity since the dawn of time. Built with a civil, scientific, military, or religious function or as a simple symbol of power and prestige, they have often been among the most demanding architectural and engineering challenges, one above all being the Tower of Pisa. With the skyscraper, they have become an icon of modernity.

Speaking of towers, did you know that the Eiffel Tower has received 200,000,000 visitors since it was built in 1889? That makes it the world's most visited paid-entry monument. In short, there is still a long way to go for the ultra-modern tower of Riyadh, the Kingdome Centre, but the conditions seem right. Just think that this city, the cradle of Islamic culture, has gone from 150,000 inhabitants in 1960 to over 8 million today. Dear Eiffel Tower... en garde!

Do you know the story of the most famous tower in the world?

Here it is, reconstructed by Gianni Biasich in "1 minute of history"
