MicroDances in Stavros Niarchos

The "MicroDances" (MicroDanze) project is born in Italy from Aterballetto - Fondazione Nazionale della Danza. The MicroDanze idea is not aimed at confirming, with just one performance, the natural symphony and experimented dialogue that already exists between choreographers and visual artists. Rather, it is a matter of bringing dance completely to art's natural environment: the exhibition.

MicroDanze is not a performance with an end, but an exposition of dancing works of art. Micro-choreographies, each signed by a different choreographer, usually for just once dancer (but Preljocaj thought of a duet, and Tortelli of a trio).

Each dancer has a space to perform in that is very small: slightly bigger than a glass showcase or a plinth for a statue. Some of these are also adapted to urban public spaces; other ones have a second version based on the type of instalment, also mixing creative processes and ways to see the dance. Each choreographer can freely imagine a space of different shape and dimension.

Choreographers, therefore, can create short performances of 6/10 minutes each, that will be danced inside those very small spaces. The public can see the dance is different ways: by walking around in a large space that hosts all performances, each one distanced from each other, or with a performance in each room, like in a museum.

MicroDanze also partnered with the exceptional Greek National Opera, with its young talents from its professional dance academy. Besides the Museum of the Acropolis and the Monastiraki market, the Stavros Niarchos centre was one of the spaces with the greatest success in terms of the project. For our online Museum, we can now relive these performances.
