The work and the technique: Long Beach International Gateway, USA
Work on the construction of the Long Beach International Gateway was awarded to a joint venture led by Webuild and began in 2014.
The project consisted of the construction of two approach viaducts along the east-west route and a main cable-stayed bridge spanning the main channel connecting the outer breakwater area with the inner piers.
The supporting structure of the deck is made of steel and was pre-assembled on site in segments, the launching of which was done through the use of a hoisting system to replace previously placed and already tensioned ashlars with the final stays.
The project was particularly challenging from a technical and organizational point of view, as it involved maintaining road and ship traffic, to and from the port, throughout the construction period, making the old and new structures coexist.
