The work and the technique: Atakoy water treatment plan, Turkey

The work at the Ataköy water purification plant sought to adapt it to treat the wastewater from some of the area's urban districts using advanced biological methods, with the subsequent discharge of the purified water into the sea, making it a renewed resource for the environment.

Wastewater treatment uses various processes ranging from rock traps to aerated degreasing to clarification and disinfection. The sludge treatment also employs several steps, from anaerobic digestion to dehydration with centrifuges, to drying.

The plant modernisation work, assigned to a consortium led by Fisia Italimpianti (Webuild Group) was divided into two lots.

In the first lot, the existing purification plant was upgraded; the second lot saw the building of a new section of the plant with a treatment capacity of 240,000 m³/d, of which 20,000 m³/d is treated using a modern unit called MBR (Membrane Bio-Reactor)
