SIBIU – PITESTI HIGHWAY, LOT 3, ROMANIA
The Sibiu- Pitești highway in Romania is a major road artery under construction that will cross the Carpathians, connecting the central and western part of the country to the European motorway network as part of the Rhine-Danube Corridor of the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) . Once completed, the highway will be more than 122 kilometers long , significantly improving connectivity and boosting economic development in the region.
Lot 3 of the highway is the most complex part of the project, as it will cross the Carpathian Mountains between Cornetu and Tigveni for 37.4 kilometers. Of these, 12.5 kilometers will include bridges and viaducts, while a twin tunnel will be 1.7 kilometers long. In addition to the tunnel, bridges and viaducts, Lot 3 involves the design and construction of over 23 kilometers of dual-lane motorway, two interchanges at Valeni and Cornetu , 18 kilometers of consolidation works, the construction of a maintenance center and control, and interventions for the protection of the environment , including animal crossings at the Olt river .
Once the five under-construction sections of the motorway are completed, the Sibiu- Pitești will connect central and western Romania to the European motorway network, significantly improving mobility. The project is financed 85% by European Union funds and 15% by state funds.
