Interstate 70 - Pennsylvania, USA

INTERSTATE 70 – PENNSYLVANIA, USA
New interchange signage, improved lighting systems, and the transfer of the Intelligent Transport System (ITS) are some of the benefits brought by the reconstruction and expansion project of certain sections of Interstate 70 in Washington County, Pennsylvania. The project primarily involves expanding a western section of the Interstate from two to three lanes in each direction and reconstructing a four-lane section in the eastern part. This project has improved road safety, upgraded the lighting and drainage systems, and enhanced guardrails and road markings.
The reconstruction involved several phases, including repaving existing lanes, expanding support infrastructure, and implementing measures to reduce traffic congestion. New technologies and materials were employed to ensure greater durability and wear resistance, thus reducing the need for costly future maintenance.
Specifically, the western section of the project, from SR 136 Beau Street to the I-79 South Junction, expanded a section of I-70 from two to three lanes in each direction. The eastern part of the project, from the I-79 South Junction to the SR 0519 interchange, involves reconstructing the four-lane section of I-70. The project includes extending acceleration and deceleration lanes and related structural work: replacing the bridge allowing Eastbound I-70 to pass over the CSX; constructing two sound barriers on Westbound I-70; building a retaining wall; and various underground drainage extensions.
One of the primary goals of the reconstruction was to bring the highway up to modern road safety standards. This involved creating wider lanes, constructing divider barriers to separate opposing traffic flows, and installing advanced lighting and signage systems to improve visibility and nighttime driving.
