I-85 Widening, N.C., USA

I-85 WIDENING, N.C., USA
The project consists of widening approximately seven miles of Interstate 85 from four to eight lanes from south of Bruton Smith Boulevard/Concord Mills Boulevard to north of NC 73 and road improvements near the interchange. The work on Bruton Smith Boulevard was needed to reduce road congestion near the busy Charlotte Motor Speedway by adding a lane to ease access to I-85. Nearby, the interchange is also home to the Concord Mills Mall, North Carolina 's premier tourist attraction.
The works included the construction of signs, lighting, erosion control, traffic control, retaining walls and sound barriers, drainage, foundations, embankments, ramps and temporary structures.
Due to road congestion and project-related transportation restrictions on all roads crossing the I-85 road corridor, an existing bridge could not be used in this situation. Lane Construction (Webuild Group) therefore opted to build a temporary bridge to provide an access ramp to the existing median. This solution was honored by the American Road & Transportation Builders Association (ARTBA) with the "TransOvation Award" for 2012.
