I-85 on Yadkin River

I-85 ON YADKIN RIVER, NORTH CAROLINA, USA
Reduction of accidents and promotion of safer working conditions. With these motivations, the refurbishment project of Interstate 85 over the Yadkin River in North Carolina received the Safety Success Certificate in 2012, recognized by the North Carolina Department of Labor.
Among the works carried out were comprehensive upgrades to the highway, bridges, and rail infrastructure located along a vital stretch of I-85 in the Triangle region of North Carolina. This corridor is the most direct and heavily traveled route between Richmond, VA, and Atlanta, GA, carrying nearly 70,000 vehicles per day. Lane Construction (Webuild Group), in collaboration with Flatiron Construction Corporation, modernized nearly seven miles of I-85 in Davidson and Rowan counties. The works included widening the road from four to eight lanes, realigning the roadway to eliminate sharp curves, and improving the interchange with NC 150.
Eight bridges were replaced, including the one that crosses I-85 over the Yadkin River. The two-lane bridge was replaced with four lanes approximately 2,700 feet long suitable for the 70 mph speed standard for an urban freeway. The increased span of these new parallel bridges will also provide space for future railway improvements, including the necessary alignment for the implementation of high-speed rail and the addition of new freight rail lines.
