I-440 Beltine Widening, North Carolina

I-440 BELTLINE WIDENING, NORTH CAROLINA, USA
One of the historic stretches of I-440 in Wake County, North Carolina, dating back to the 1960s, will be modernized to respond to the significant increase in population and traffic recorded to date. This is the heart of the project that Lane Construction (Webuild Group) is carrying out on behalf of the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT).
Improving access, reducing congestion, and increasing the functionality of the roadway are some of the objectives the project aims to achieve. The affected stretch is 6.5 miles long and will be brought up to current standards by expanding from 4 to 6 lanes.
Currently, the heavily trafficked roadway and the interchanges between Walnut Street in Cary and Wade Avenue in Raleigh have poor safety elements, such as acceleration and deceleration lanes that, according to NCDOT, are too short.
According to NCDOT, North Carolina's population has grown tremendously in recent years, making the state one of the fastest-growing in the nation. With more people living, working, and visiting North Carolina, there are also more people on the roads.
