I-395 EXPRESS LANE EXTENSION, VIRGINIA, USA
The I-395 Express Lanes project in Virginia includes extending toll lanes for approximately 8 miles, from Edsall Road in Fairfax County to Eads Street in Arlington County. This extension aims to improve traffic flow and reduce congestion along I-395, effectively connecting the 95 Express Lanes with the Washington DC line. Launched in late 2017, work includes demolition of existing structures, excavation, installation of systems drainage and placement of anti-noise barriers to improve the quality of life in adjacent residential areas. Numerous traffic diversions were necessary to allow the works to be carried out without completely interrupting traffic.
The project, financed by public-private partnerships, also includes improvements to existing infrastructure, such as bridges and intersections, to ensure a harmonious integration of the new lanes. The extension of the I-395 Express Lanes includes new on- and off-ramps, making it easier for vehicles to enter and exit the express lanes, further reducing travel times, and the implementation of advanced technologies for traffic management, such as electronic tolling systems and intelligent signs, to optimize vehicular flow and improve road safety.
