I-385 WIDENING, SOUTH CAROLINA, USA
Intervene before it's necessary. Interstate 385 is indeed the shortest and therefore the busiest stretch between Greenville and Columbia, South Carolina, with over 60,000 vehicles per day, projected to increase to 80,000 by 2028.
For this reason, the decision was made to expand Interstate 385 to six lanes. This is the largest project funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) in South Carolina.
Specifically, the project includes design and improvement works along a 5.5-mile (11.27 km) stretch near Greenville, expanding it to six lanes from the north to exit 29. Lane Construction (Webuild Group) also repaved the section between Woodruff Road and South Roper Mountain Road, covering a total of 7 miles in length.
The project involved widening the bridges at exits 30 and 31 and rehabilitating the access ramp. With the exception of some limited closures during nighttime hours, Lane carried out construction works without interrupting road traffic, diverted onto two lanes.
