DAYTONA INTERNATIONAL SPEEDWAY, FLORIDA, USA
Daytona International Speedway is one of the most iconic racetracks in the world of auto racing, located in Daytona Beach, Florida. In 2010, during the Daytona 500 NASCAR race, a significant incident occurred that highlighted the need for a track renovation: a hole formed on the second bend of the track. This accident caused two race stoppages and required immediate repairs. However, the first repair was not sufficient and the hole reformed, requiring further repairs which delayed the race by approximately two and a half hours overall.
A massive reconstruction operation of the circuit's track was initiated. High-wear areas were resurfaced using an advanced four-layer asphalt system. The bottom of the new structure includes key drainage layers positioned at critical points of the runway, supported by a perforated 6-inch (15.24 cm) underground drainage channel to effectively manage stormwater and spring water.
This renovation not only improved track safety, reducing the risk of structural problems during races, but also optimized conditions for more consistent and reliable driving performance.
Daytona International Speedway continues to be a point of reference in the world of racing, not only for its history and tradition, but also for the constant attention to the quality and safety of the infrastructure that supports the exciting motor sport.
