BUTETOWN - CARDIFF LINK ROAD, UNITED KINGDOM
The project for the road connection of Butetown has seen the construction of a 2.7 km expressway, with a significant portion of 900 m through a tidal zone. The project focuses on three main structures: a 600 m long viaduct over the River Taff estuary, consisting of nine spans; three bridges over the Ferry Road, with prefabricated beams that allow the main road and two side roads to cross the Ferry Road at different heights; and the Butetown Road Tunnel, divided into western and eastern approaches, with a 715 m long main structure executed using the " cut and cover" method.
The main tunnel, made of reinforced concrete, was a complex work carried out in an urban area with strict technical and construction standards. The western access was built on a 235 m long reinforced concrete structure, supported by diaphragm walls and 900 mm diameter bored piles. The base slab, with a thickness of 1 meter, rests on 462 piles with lengths varying between 19 and 30 m. The eastern access, 215 m long, used diaphragm walls and 1.050 mm diameter bored piles, with a base slab also 1 meter thick and supported by 237 piles varying in length between 14 and 20 m.
These works have made it possible to significantly improve traffic and connectivity in the area, maintaining continuous operations during the works and respecting the strict environmental and safety regulations required.
