The Breakwaters at the Port of Constanta, Romania

THE BREAKWATERS AT THE PORT OF CONSTANTA, ROMANIA
The Constanta breakwaters in Romania represent an important port infrastructure located on the shores of the Black Sea. Their main purpose is to ensure the protection of the port of Constantza from storms and storm surges, as well as to facilitate the safe access of ships to the port. During the completion and repair works of the North and South breakwaters, various measures were implemented to improve their efficiency and resistance to adverse marine conditions.
The project was financed by the European Investment Bank with the support of EEC funds from the PHARE Programme, as well as by the Romanian government.
The total length of the two dams is 12,850 meters, of which the northern breakwater extends for 7,300 meters and the southern one for 5,550 meters.
During the works, rock material from the existing piers was removed with pontoon-mounted excavators and grab cranes, then transported and stored awaiting reuse according to size.
