THE BAKOLORI DAM AND IRRIGATION PROJECT, NIGERIA
In Nigeria one of the longest dams in the world. This is the Bakolori Dam, with a crest length of about 5 km. Located in the sub-Saharan region, it was built between 1975 and 1983. The project is situated in Sokoto State, in northwestern Nigeria.
The project is particularly extensive and, in addition to the dam, it includes a supply canal, three major bridges over the Sokoto and Bobo rivers, main, secondary, and tertiary canals, land leveling, transmission lines, pumping, lifting and drainage stations, drainage channels, roads, flood dykes, a pipe bridge over the Sokoto River, a 3,000 m long siphon across the Gora Valley, roads, and service centers
The total areas involved in the project cover over 400,000,000 m² and the construction employed over 5,000 people. The area has also been equipped with all the necessary infrastructure to provide an irrigation area of 35,000 gross hectares for both surface and sprinkler irrigation.
