Las Portas Dam on the Camba River

LAS PORTAS DAM ON THE CAMBA RIVER, SPAIN
The Las Portas Dam is a remarkable engineering work located on the Camba River in Spain. Built between 1970 and 1973, the dam is an example of the country's development of hydroelectric infrastructure.
The construction of the dam posed a significant engineering challenge due to the geological characteristics of the area and the technologies available at the time. The main structure is a concrete gravity dam, designed to withstand the pressure of the water accumulated in the artificial reservoir created by its barrier. The reservoir, known as Lagoa das Portas, plays a crucial role both in hydroelectric power generation and in the management of the region's water resources.
The Las Portas Dam is equipped with a hydroelectric power plant with turbines capable of generating an installed capacity of about 500 MW, providing energy to numerous local communities and significantly contributing to the national power grid. In addition to energy production, the dam also serves to regulate the flow of the Camba River, preventing floods and ensuring a steady water supply for agricultural irrigation and other domestic needs.
