KPONG HYDROELECTRIC PLANT, GHANA
The Kpong Hydroelectric Plant, built between 1978 and 1982, is located on the Volta River, 25 km downstream from Akosombo and 80 km north-east of Accra, Ghana. This power plant is part of the Volta River hydroelectric system, the largest waterway in the country and one of the most important in West Africa. The main dam is 18 meters high and 240 meters long.
The Kpong plant is run-of-river and includes a power plant on the right bank, 148 meters long, 40 meters wide and 64 meters high, which houses four units of 40 MW each. The 280 meters long concrete spillway is located in the center of the river, while the main dam connects to the spillway reaching the left bank. The power plant's four Kaplan turbines have a total capacity of 160 MW. Furthermore, the project included the creation of a large irrigation network for the cultivation of sugar cane, improving local agriculture and supporting the regional economy
