Kainji Hydroelectric Plant, Nigeria

KAINJI HYDROELECTRIC PLANT, NIGERIA
Development of fishing, improvement of river navigation and irrigation. All while producing green energy. These were the multiple challenges of the Kainji Hydroelectric Plant on the Niger River in Nigeria. Built between 1964 and 1969, it is located about 800 km from the river's mouth.
The project was particularly extensive, also including the construction of new roads, the new town of New Bussa (to relocate the communities living in the reservoir area), as well as the workers' village and various navigation structures.
The complex also includes a concrete gravity dam, with spillway, intakes, and penstocks; two earth and rockfill dams with impervious clay core, an auxiliary earth dam on the left bank, and a powerhouse.
