El Quimbo Hydroelectric Plant

EL QUIMBO HYDROELECTRIC PLANT, COLOMBIA
The production of clean energy has become a fundamental principle for almost every country in the world, as contributing to the protection of the environment has become a common goal.
Colombia is no exception and has commissioned the construction of the El Quimbo hydroelectric plant, located in the department of Huila on the Magdalena River. This sustainable project will provide an important source of clean energy for the entire department, with an installed capacity of 400 megawatts and a planned average energy production of 2,216 GWh/year. Using two vertical axis turbines and a reservoir with a storage capacity of 1,824 hm³, El Quimbo makes a significant contribution to the region's energy sustainability.
The project involved the construction of a 150 metres high, 635 metre long concrete face fill (CFRD) main dam. This structure is equipped with a right-hand spillway controlled by four sluice gates and a 'springboard' spillway for energy dissipation. A second dam has also been constructed.
As well as providing an important source of clean energy, the construction of El Quimbo has had a positive impact on employment. More than 2,300 people worked with to create this great infrastructure.
The project also integrated the most advanced solutions for environmental protection and the rehabilitation of an area with high agricultural potential, demonstrating a strong commitment to sustainable development and improving the quality of life in the region.
