DIRE DAM, ETHIOPIA
The Dire Dam was commissioned with the aim of ensuring water supply to the capital Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Built between 1996 and 1998, the dam is an earthen structure 1,997 meters long and 48.5 meters high.
The project included the construction of auxiliary stone protections, an intake tower, a spillway and a 10 km long water main. The Dire Dam not only ensures a constant water supply for the city of Addis Ababa, but also plays a crucial role in managing local water resources, improving the city's resilience against drought and climate variations. The dam is crucial for supporting agricultural irrigation in the surrounding areas and for the production of hydroelectric energy, contributing to the sustainable development of the region.
